Beginner Lace Classes

I am planning to teach a beginning lace class soon (contact me for details) and today I'm working on swatches for the class

whenever I teach someone to knit lace, I teach them using dk/thicker yarn & then progress as they feel comfortable in handling thinner yarn.

The examples you see are unblocked.

You see the example with the DPN? I do a knitted cast on/bind off with yarn held double & wrap the yarn around a dpn & don't weave in ends until after blocking to make sure I have enough to do what I need to in order to finish my work.

in the last example you see my lifeline. Yes, I do that even with swatches & I do swatches and check gauge even if the pattern doesn't call for it. I do it every single time.

I am planning to teach the different stitches you may encounter in lace knitting, the types of yarn you can see used, how to block and how to do the knitted cast on/bind off & even show how to fix simple mistakes as math being off and a dropped stitch.

If you are interested in taking these classes let me know!

dear laser printer how I love ye.

Yesterday was printing of crap I need to/want to print (knit wise/business wise). I printed off like 1000 pages of paper. NO LIE. Up until recently I had one of those other type printers that I had to change the ink constantly even for small amounts of booklets, etc. that I wanted to print.

The cartridge only costs $25 and prints like 2000 pages. TRUE STORY.

I got my printer still in box new from ebay for $119 and it's worth over $200 and I'm a happy camper. I can not recommend getting a laser printer enough, especially if you have a small business and have lots of papers to print. I am officially in love.

Out of everything I've purchased for my company this is my favorite.

in other news:
my business cards and business t-shirt came in yesterday. I'm real, yo. Vista Print is also a friend now. I got more business cards than I will probably ever hand out (who realllyyyyy wants my business card)........?? anyone???? Bueller??? Bueller?

*for those that don't "get" my humor, this is Ferris Bueller*
if you haven't seen this movie...see it. Then you will giggggggggglllllee!

I realize that I didn't post a "how to" Monday, but I was busy trying to create a monkey (nooooo not a real monkey. I'm crazy but not crazy enough to think I can create a live thing.....wait a minute.....I have had 4 children! I can create things! But not monkeys. sadly......not monkeys.)

meet my sad sad sad knitting failure. Marcel the Monkey

I tried doing something new and this is my sad sad thing I created. Bless his heart. I tried doing something different with the eyes because no matter how 'safe' I make them, I always worry about eyes choking babies....this was also a failure.

I haven't the heart to frog (unravel) him. For some reason I feel for this poor monkey that I failed at knitting. He was meant to be a knitted gift for a neighbors son that had a b'day this past weekend & I couldn't attend due to my dental crap I had going on....needless to say my neighbors son will NOT be forced to have this monkey. Marcel will just live with me....I can't make anyone else want him.

of concerts and Jane Austin Knits

I have had terrible bouts of pain with one of my wisdom teeth. This past Tuesday I was given the pleasure of getting that painful thing pulled. I'm still not 100% but I know I'm well on my way.

Saturday night I went to my first ever concert. That's right.....ever. I went to see Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden in Lakewood APM. in Atlanta Ga & let me tell you it was amazing! I had the time of my life.

I won't bore you with ALL my pictures....but here is something

I'm not even gonna apologize for how old, tired, and fat I look in these pics. It was that fun.

in other news

I finished my Margaret Dashwood Shawl from Jane Austin Knits Summer 2012 and it knitted up like a dream. I can not recommend this pattern enough....for novice and professional knitters alike. My version will have buttons at the back (end) so that I can wear it on my Kymco. This yarn (Patrons Lace Yarn) is soft as butter!

I did add a crochet edging (because I do that with almost everything). KNIT THIS! YOU MUST!

Are those knitting needles in your pocket?

as a rule of thumb, here are the knitting needle size conversion. I use these as gospel. I have found these to always be correct charts. I even have this copied off & I carry it with me because I'm rarely without my knitting in my hands or a knitting project on my mind.

A lot can be said about using straight needles v/s interchangeable needles. I have loads of both kinds. In all honesty what really has made interchangeable needles my go to is the fact that I can't lose 1/2 of the needle. I have 3 or 4 needles that are without mates due to the fact I LOSE EVERYTHING. With these interchangeable needles it's been harder for me to 'pull a Kim' and lose them.

I have tried many different types of needles. I've found bamboo to be my least favorite with Denise Interchangeable needles running a close least favorite. The D's were too thick corded & it seemed to me that the yarn would just scratch along the needles. I am a tight knitter so this was no fun for me. I have put them away for another time.....especially since my doggie ran off with one of the larger size needles.

my favorite needles of all time come from Knitpicks and they are their interchangeable needles. Go...look and fall in love. Interchangeable Needles I have two different styles of their interchangeable, the harmony wood being my favorite.  Knitpicks has an awesome staff that goes above and beyond to make sure your order is correct & even helps you out with problems after the sale. I had a cord that started coming loose and they sent me another of the same size for free eventhough it was a year after my purchase. Now that is customer service, and believe me I've been loyal to them since this happened.

I have had a great deal of luck with trying different needles at our local sit-and-knit. Different knitters love different needles sometimes and we've ended up playing with others needles and projects more times than not it seems. You may want to meet up with local knitters and pass around the projects so that you can try the needles that others are using. You may be pleasantly surprised at what needles become your favorite.

What type of needles do you use?

How to Mondays: How to cast on.

One just needs to do a search engine search to see that there are almost as many ways to cast on as knitters to cast on the yarn.

I am a continental knitter.....if you don't know what that means, it means:

Knitting with the yarn in one's left hand is commonly referred to as Continental knitting, German knitting, European knitting, or left-hand knitting. Unlike English knitting, the yarn is held in the left hand; the motion of bringing the yarn forward with a needle held in the other hand is thus sometimes known as picking. Continental knitting can be done at a greater rate than English knitting, as the stitches are formed closer to the needle points and the yarn has a shorter travel.[1]
Continental-style knitting, being associated with Germany, fell out of favour in English-speaking countries during World War II; its reintroduction in the United States is often credited to Elizabeth Zimmerman. (source www.ask.com)
I first taught myself to crochet & it felt more natural to learn to knit this way, opposed to trying to knit with the right hand. Just about the only think I do right handed is write (thanks to the public school system that made my life torment in 1st grade that felt a left handed child was a demon seed & must be changed to go along with the rest of the class). I honestly can not can not knit any other way. I've tried to teach myself what I call the 'normal' way that others knit and it feels backwards to me.

sometimes I even have to reverse the patterns to get my head wrapped around what they are saying sometimes.......

that being said, if you leave with only one understanding today it's this..........do what feels natural & makes sense to you. If you are tense or uptight your knitting stitches will be tight & no one has fun trying to stitch those off the needles.

Today is the first How to Monday so I thought I would review how to cast on. When I first started teaching myself to knit (there was NO ONE to teach me so I had to teach myself), I couldn't get the understanding of the pictures that showed how to cast on, so I created my own cast on technique. I will show you someday in a video how I do it, but I don't want to confuse anyone as to what I've adapted so...lets go with the general rule of thumb on how to cast on.

Lots of new knitters make the mistake of picking up needles and yarn in excitement of the thoughts of knitting without giving full complete thought as to the choice of needles and the choice of yarn. I know I was one such person. I went to our local Wally world & picked up a really small size needles and really thick yarn not understanding what I was getting myself into at that time.

I sat around trying to teach myself by reading books until I was in tears. Youtube was just starting to be on the mainstream (as far as I was concerned) and refused to give up until I 'got' it. You can ask my poor husband. Dishes were unwashed, clothes were not done, nothing.....it's a thousand wonders I even left the screen to do anything..but I finally got it. Using the wrong yarns and everything.

My advice to new knitters is to relax. Have faith in yourself & it will all come. Take a deep breath.....grab your needles and yarn.....and have a go

how to cast on (knit on)

Step 1:  If starting work from the beginning, you will need to start with a slip knot.  Otherwise, you need to have at least one stitch already on the left needle. This holds the yarn steady for you to do the rest of the casting on that you need to do.

Step 2: Insert the right needle into the stitch on the left needle as if to knit and bring the yarn over knitwise.

Step 3:  Pull the yarn through to create a stitch on the right needle.

Step 4:  Slip the stitch from the right needle on to the left needle without twisting.

Step 5:  Do it again!  Insert the needle in the newly created stitch as if to knit and bring the yarn over knitwise.

Step 6:  Slip this newly-created stitch onto the left needle.

Step 7:  Keep repeating steps 5 & 6 until the desired number of stitches have been created.

I can not suggest enough to look at youtube until you find a cast on technique that works for you. How to cast on YOUTUBE style

You may find great luck in finding local yarn stores to go into to get the 'face to face' instruction and how to's from them. I have found 'face to face' teaching to be a great resource.

Local Yarn stores......let me google that for you...... (hope that type of link made you giggle...I know I did!)

have great fun learning to knit! I know you can do it! If I can learn anyone can learn!

review of Patrons Lace Yarn

today I am knitting with Patrons Lace
Lace
by Patons
Light Fingering / 3 ply
80% Acrylic, 10% Wool, 10% Mohair
498 yards / 85 grams

I am knitting The Margaret Dashwood Shawl (the very same pattern that I was knitting other yarn with to do). I frogged the whole pattern and started with this yarn.

I am 15 repeats into the increase section & I've found this yarn to be a very smooth knit. It is light fingering/3 ply, but since it's 10% mohair it feels bigger than that to me.

I can't wait to show you the picture of the finished shawl!

This yarn is an excellent value for it's price. Just make sure you don't find mohair itchy...

you can find others comments on this yarn on Ravelry (link)

my future crazy ol lady

I was just sitting here thinking about how I will look as an old lady. Some people may look at me & think I'm crazy for my tats, and what I've done with my life. What I really want people to know is that I have learned a lot with the life I've lived, I've had more fun and gotten into more laughter than I could ever mention here on the internet

My Mom had ALS and it took her from us in 2005. She had her voice stolen from her by the disease & it eventually paralyzed her before she passed on. I use to look at her being trapped on that bed feeling like life was so unfair for her, like a Greek Tragedy, because she had way too much sadness in her life throughout her life that not everyone knows about.

I would rub her hands the last days of her life, trying to memorize every line, how beautiful her long nails were, and the gentle feel of her skin. Even now I can almost feel it....as I rubbed her hands I thought about how much she missed out on and how much she was going to miss out on all because this disease was going to kill her and take her from us......

I know that I can't stop life from having that happen to me, but what I can do is have memories to keep me company when no one else wants to, thoughts of happier times when time is dragging on because I can't move....songs made up to make people laugh to make them say to me "hey, remember when you could talk & you would make up those songs?" and I wouldn't be able to look at a part of my body and fondly remember those tats then.....all of that I wouldn't have if I didn't do these 'crazy' things.

I don't know if my Mom would have ever said "she had fun" before she died. Sometimes I remember back & know that I was a source of sadness and tears for her and regret that every moment of my life.....after I'm gone I want my children to think of me as having fun, that I taught them things about living, loving, and life, and that I made life fun for them, that I gave them more laughter than tears and more adventures than even the most experienced traveler ever dreamed of. I want my children to remember the days of dancing in the rain, cooking biscuits that were hard as rocks, seeing me work all those jobs so they could have things, laughing at memories of my mispronouncing words like "hyperbole".....I may have been hard at times, and was all about tough love (with the emphasis on love), but they knew where I stood & knew that I love them. Is that too much to ask?

If there comes a time that I'm no longer here on earth.....I want you all to know one thing..........

I've had fun. Thanks for playing in this with me.

yarn review:JL Vinca colorway 815

I started my Margaret Dashwood Shawl & I am using this yarn.JL VINCA
It was a purchase that as it stands I wouldn't make again in the future.

It has been splitty, and fuzzy and had several 'thin' places in it. I am only hoping that this is just a bad place in the yarn and not the whole yarn or it's gonna be a long day

the shawl is such a lovely little pattern & I'm so in love with it. But this yarn is making for a trying time. I want it to be a pretty shawl & I'm worried about the fuzzies and how they will make my shawl look when I'm finished.

this yarn (thus far) only gets a 2 out of 10 in my opinion. You truly get what you pay for when it comes to this yarn.

Review of Jane Austin Knits Summer 2012 (Dashwood Shawl)

Yesterday, I cast on for the Dashwood Shawl from Jane Austin Knits, Summer 2012. I am already in love

pictures property of interweave knits

I don't normally do the instant gratification of getting patterns & books the moment the preview shows up in my email, but this one time I allowed myself to do so.......and man am I glad I did. This is one of the books/ebook that I may actually knit everything from the book/ebook.

You can see more of the lovely patterns HERE

I mean, come on...tell me this pattern doesn't make you swoon
I plan on making this sometimes this fall. Although I won't be making it so skin tight on me. No one wants to see me wearing something that tight!

and after all is said and done, I must have one of these hats. It will help conceal my Kymco induced hair.....The helmet hair look is not for me my friend. I need help with concealing my already bad looking hair after I've been riding all day. Take my word for it........

I can not CAN NOT recommend this book enough. Seriously. It's already one of my favorite pattern books.

Why I should have a knitting related job with you

I am sure there are many people in this world that want to have a job knitting and in the crafting related......I'm nothing special in that......but I do have a list of the reasons WHY you should hire me in your knitting/crafting related field....

10. I have terrible hair. You should hire me because with me in your employ your hair will ALWAYS look better than mine.....true story
See? Told'ya. Hair........ugly.....(but at least its there until I donate it again to Locks of Love)

9. I have mad knitting skills, yo
yeah. I knitted THAT. A whole blanket of it. And it's delicious! Who doesn't want me to knit this for them? Not because I'm that good, but because the stitch is that pretty.....no wait......I just said I have mad skills so scratch that.......

8. I have more piercings than I care to tell you....in some of the strangest places
oh my gosh.....I stick my tongue out a lot......should that be number 7? yeah....lets make that the #7 reason why you should hire me.....my bad to the bone sticking my tongue out at the right time skills.

6. I have the cutest mini-doxie I've ever seen and I've named him Sheldon Cooper Storey Yep.after This Guy AND my mini-doxie has his own Facebook page xBadger Houndx, and he IS the Badger Hound...word.

5. I am very capable of doing all the work required to keep your social networking up-to-date...I even have my own Facebook page to showcase my knitting stuffs

4. The name of my knitting business is: The Dust Bunnies Will Wait. If you don't believe this is true I think you may be one of those zombies and we may need to check to see if you are the undead.

3. I can reverse engineer ANYTHING. Come on. Try me. I have reverse engineered things since the 7th grade when I couldn't afford all the things everyone else was buying so I had to learn to sew them myself.

2. I'm always learning. I have 3 college degrees and I'm currently doing my masters in knitting. Yeah. That's right.......masters....in....knitting....(the inner geek in me, and the future old lady in me is proud right now)

but the number 1 reason you should think about hiring me:
this is the only thing I've ever dreamed of doing more than loving the air I breathe. It's everything I eat sleep and breathe. Other than my family and friends it is most on my mind.....I always have knitting needles and yarn in my hands and it's what I'm put here to do.....

won't you help me have my dream come true & give me a chance to work for you?

In case you EVER wondered how serious I am about this whole knitting thing I have going on.....

I have loved knitting so much that THIS is how serious about it I am. I'm tatted now..
(well, again...this is my 3rd and 4th tat here)
****AARRRGGGG*** I'm not gonna let on how bad this hurt! I'm a man!

okay hon...how many pics are you gonna take?
 OUCH CHRIS!!!

 Tat 1 of 2 FINISHED
and there they are......my precious!

what's so funny is this is actually the way I knit. I knit left handed & hold my fingers & hands JUST like this....my tat it is.....amazing!

The artist, Chris Morant, is a true artist. His artwork is amazing!

if you swing by there, be sure to tell him that Kim sent ya! (yeah, that's me.)
